Painted night scene: a person seen from behind stands on a path, reaching for glowing stars in a swirling violet sky.

A lucid dream is a dream in which you notice that you’re dreaming. The dream goes on, but you know. Some people can then even steer what happens.

It’s not a rare talent: about half of all people have had at least one lucid dream. Roughly one in four people has one about once a month.

In the sleep lab this can be measured: lucid dreamers send a signal from inside the dream with agreed eye movements.
